Epic presents riveting 'Agnes of God'

Posted

John Pielmeier’s tale of a young nun suspected of murdering her newborn baby is given a riveting performance by a trio of very fine actresses at Kevin Broccoli’s Epic Theatre.

Lynne Collinson, an experienced actor/director, has resurged as one of the leaders in Rhode Island’s theatre community, placing her emphasis on providing quality roles for women. Collinson has gathered three of the best: Angelique Dina as Sister Agnes, Lee Rush as Mother Miriam Ruth, and Melanie Stone as Dr. Martha Livingston.

Set in the intimate Epic space at 50 Rolfe St. in Cranston, the emphasis is on the acting, with only a couple of tables and chairs and a compelling use of lighting on stage.

Sister Agnes is sent to a court-appointed psychiatrist after the death of a newborn baby is discovered in her room. The psychiatrist confronts the head of the convent while examining Agnes and trying to get at the truth. What happened and why? These are questions that are not easily answered, as religion and faith are challenged at every turn.

As we learn Agnes’ backstory, we also learn more about Mother Miriam Ruth and Dr. Martha Livingstone, as their religious perspectives come front and center.

While the play raises more questions than answers, it challenges its audience to look inside themselves and question their own beliefs. The intimacy of the theatre and the brilliant acting of Dina, Rush and Stone make for an intense, thought-provoking evening of theatre.

“Agnes of God” is at Epic, 50 Rolfe St. in Cranston, through February 23. For tickets and more e-mail www.artists-exchange.org.
