The CCRI Knights welcomed the Cougars of Holyoke Community College to Whitey Fell Field on Wednesday. The Knights and Cougars played through the windy conditions to complete the game. The Knights were able to prevail on a mercy rule in the eighth inning by a final of 13-3.

The Knights bats started the game off strong. They had three runs on the board before Holyoke was able to record an out.  After the first two innings, the Knights led 7-0.

Although it was down, Holyoke continued to fight. It started to string together baserunners, as well as play good defensive baseball. It was able to cut the lead to four runs in the seventh inning at 7-3.

The Knights felt the pressure and turned the offense back on, scoring six runs over the next two innings to initiate the 10-run rule.

The Knights sent two pitchers out on the day. Cam Albin (Pawcatuck, Connecticut) started the game for the Knights.  Albin gave up three runs on the day, with only one earned. He scattered five hits and four walks over his six innings of work.  Albin struck out five batters on his way to earning his first win of the season.

In the seventh inning, the Knights turned to Billy Bostick (Cedar Park, Texas). Bostick struck out three batters over two innings of work. Bostick saw out the game for the Knights, only allowing two baserunners.

At the plate, the Knights were led by their three men at the top of the lineup. Jasiah Hatch (East Providence, Rhode Island) led off, going 2-for-3 with two hits and one walk. He scored three runs on the day and drove in one. Robert Paulino (Miramar, Florida) went 2-for-5 with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, Oklahoma) batted third and went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Knights had four big innings to reach 13 runs and bring the 10-run rule into effect.

The victory was Head Coach Ken Hopkins’ 400th in a CCRI uniform. Hopkins, who was already the all-time leader in wins for CCRI, reached this milestone in just 595 games. He became the CCRI all-time wins leader in the 2011 season when he surpassed Harold “Whitey” Fell, who the CCRI baseball field in named after. Fell, who is second on the all-time win list, had a record of 250-105-1 with a 70 percent win percentage. Hopkins has a win percentage at CCRI of 68 percent. Hopkins also serves as a Citywide Councilman for Cranston, Rhode Island.
