Housing Authority's annual cookout the 'perfect party'

Fun, food and family.

Those were the key ingredients of last Thursday’s annual Johnston Housing Authority Cookout held on the green grass outside Claiborne Pall Manor off Plainfield Street.

“David [aRusso] really knows how to host the perfect party,” District 1 Town Council member Linda Folcarelli said of the authority’s executive director. “There’s always lots of good food, great people … everyone is happy and smiling. The setting is perfect.”

JHA staffers erected blue-covered canopy tents and set up round tables with chairs to keep attendees out of the midday sun. They also made sure there were enough servers for residents to go through the buffet line, fill up their plates and get a cold drink before sitting down to lunch.

Johnston Police Maj. Matt Leduc, Capt. Chris Correia, veteran Johnston state Rep. Deborah Fellela and Pell Manor Tenants Association president Marty Church were among those who heaped praise upon aRusso and his staff for the day’s menu, which included hamburgers, hot dogs, potato, egg and pasta salad, sausage and peppers and chips.

The annual affair was enhanced by the special appearance of Debbie Celetti, a Johnston resident and noted singer-disc jockey-entertainer who treated the day’s audience to many popular hits.

“This is always a special event,” Fellela said as she hugged her daughter Ally, who is a Housing Authority staffer and helped Church sell tickets for the day’s 50/50 drawing. “Everyone is so friendly here.”

Anna Murphy, an officer with the Pell Tenants Association, was joined by her daughter Jo-Anne Micheletti and granddaughter Zaviera during the event.

“Today, it’s good, old-fashioned fun and family,” she said.
