In support of livable home tax credit

To the Editor:

As an active member of RI AARP for over 20 years, I support their advocacy efforts to help the senior population. In Warwick, I am especially thankful to sponsor Representative Joseph McNamara, and co-sponsors, Camille Vella-Wilkinson, Joseph Solomon for sponsoring House Bill S-477. The Livable Home Tax Credit would provide tax credits up to $5,000 based on 50 percent of the first $10,000 in home improvements.

This proposal would allow homeowners to make modifications to improve accessibility and safety. They would include such things as wheel chair ramps, railings, widening halls and doors, even adding an additional bathroom.

Housing that is safe and accommodating for seniors will become a significant issue in the future. The 65 population will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years.

This legislation would allow older Rhode Islanders to continue to live in their homes. It would also keep seniors out of nursing homes. Many people who go from hospitals to nursing homes never make it back home because of safety or accessibility issuers.

Elderly friends have said they want to stay in their homes as long as they can. They look for ways to live independently and not be a financial burden for anyone.

This is worthy of legislation for all of us and urges you to let your legislators know that you too, support the Livable Home Tax Credit.
