JNP, Scituate/Woonsocket Co-op skate to tie

Posted

Scituate/Woonsocket Co-op’s Garrett Rebholz scored an unassisted goal with just 28 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 2 and force overtime and, after a scoreless extra period, Scituate and Johnston/North Providence Co-op settled for a tie with both teams earning a point.

The two teams played to a scoreless first period, before Scituate’s Evan Pendergast netted an unassisted goal in the second period, the lone goal of the period, to give the Spartans a 1-0 edge at the second intermission.

It wasn’t until midway through the third period that JNP was able to get on the board, with Brandon Tanguay and Zach Bernier setting up Justin Blais for a power play goal to tie the game at 1.

JNP kept that momentum going when it took its first lead with just 49 seconds remaining in the third period, when Michael Flori and Jeremy Gervais assisted to Ryan DiLorenzo for the go-ahead goal that made it 2-1.

But, Scituate answered right back with Rebholz’s goal 21 seconds later, tying the game at 2 and forcing an overtime period.

Both goaltenders were strong in the extra frame to earn a point for their respective teams.

JNP’s David Kelly was spectacular with 30 saves, while Scituate’s Nathan Beals was also solid, making 24 stops.

JNP is now 3-0-1 in Division III play, and Scituate is now 1-2-1.

JNP will return to the ice for a pair of games this weekend. It will travel to Cranston Ice Rink to take on Mount Hope (2-2) on Friday evening at 8:10 p.m., before hosting first-place Pilgrim (4-0) at the Rhode Island Sports Center on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
