Man charged with leaving toddler alone in hot car

The father of a toddler left alone in a car during last week’s scorching heat has been charged.

Bunroth Chhun, 41, of 185 Budlong Road in Cranston, faces one count of neglect of a child. He was arraigned Aug. 12, with bail set at $5,000 surety. He was additionally ordered to have no contact with his children.

According to a statement from Cranston police, officers responded to the parking lot of the medical building at 1090 New London Ave. shortly before 2:30 p.m. Aug. 11 following a report of an unattended child in the back seat of a red Toyota van. The calling party indicated the vehicle was not running, its windows were closed, and the child – approximately three years of age – was crying.

Fire Department personnel were already on the scene when police arrived, and had been able to unlock the vehicle without force and remove the child. Officers “observed that the child was crying and sweating profusely,” the statement reads.

Police say the boy’s mother responded to the scene and took custody of him. While the boy appeared unharmed, he was later taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

At that point, officers had made contract with Chhun, who had exited the medical building. According to police, interviews with fire personnel and witnesses at the scene revealed the child had been left alone in the van for roughly 30 to 40 minutes, with the windows only partially open and no air conditioning running. During that time, police say, the temperature outside was approximately 93 degrees.

It is believed Chhun took one of his children into the medical building for an appointment and left the three-year-old behind.

Police said the Department of Children, Youth and Families was advised of the incident. The department’s Special Victims Unit was conducting a follow-up investigation.

Man faces weapons charges

A man found in possession of several weapons – including a rifle – following a recent disturbance is facing charges.

Samuel J. DeSalvo, 18, of 8 Tara St. in Johnston, is charged with a felony count of carrying a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor counts of carrying a prohibited weapon and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned Aug. 12 and released on $5,000 surety bail with an October district court date.

According to the narrative report of Patrolman David J. Loffler, officers responded to a disturbance call shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 12. Dispatch advised that two parties inside a silver Honda Accord had reportedly threatened another person with a baseball bat.

Loffler reports that upon his arrival at the scene, he observed a vehicle matching the description. After speaking with its occupants and to the reporting party inside a nearby residence, the patrolman reports he determined the vehicle’s driver, DeSalvo, had been threatening the reporting party and attempting to draw that person outside for a confrontation.

Loffler reports that DeSalvo consented to a search of the vehicle’s truck, in which the patrolman indicates he found a 7.62 mm semi-automatic rifle and an aluminum baseball bat. A further search of the vehicle uncovered 29 rounds of ammunition and a magazine, while DeSalvo had on his person a 3-1/4 inch folding knife.

Loffler reports DeSalvo was taken into custody without incident.

Wrong-way driver charged with DUI

A Woonsocket woman stopped while driving the wrong way on Route 295 in Johnston earlier this month is facing a charge of driving under the influence.

Jadali Burgess, 21, of 902 Mendon Road, was arraigned Aug. 9 and released on personal recognizance, with a next scheduled court date of Aug. 23.

According to Rhode Island State Police, a trooper working a road construction detail at approximately 3 a.m. on Aug. 9 observed a vehicle heading south on the highway’s northbound access road.

As the trooper approached the area of Exit 6B, he is said to have observed the vehicle with its headlights on traveling south in the northbound lane and coming directly at his cruiser. He was then able to position his cruiser in front of the oncoming vehicle and stop it in the low-speed breakdown lane.

Police said the driver, Burgess, “displayed signs of impairment” and consented to field sobriety testing, which she failed. She was subsequently arrested and transported to state police headquarters.
