Johnston Democrats endorse Gov. Raimondo's re-election bid

The Johnston Democratic Town Committee scored another historic first last Wednesday evening.

After Chairman Richard J. DelFino Jr. delivered a greeting regarding the many “fantastic firsts” Gov. Gina Raimondo has created and “that there’s lots of hope for Rhode Island’s future,” he called upon Mayor Joseph Polisena who continued the praise and emphasized “our mission as I have stated before is to get endorsed Democrats at the local, state, federal levels elected and re-elected.”

Polisena said “Gov. Raimondo in her four years has turned our state and our economy around to the point that we are recognized nationwide that Rhode Island is a state on the move and a perfect place to open a new business. Right here in Johnston we had 20% unemployment, but that is no longer the case thanks to our governor.”

His comments also included talk about cranes in the sky and the education of RI’s work force now and the future that the mayor reiterated “have been critical and for that we have Gov. Raimondo to thank. Here in Johnston, we have the Citizens Bank mega campus nearing completion, and if it’s not for our governor, that would not have happened.”

Polisena went on to say – and thank – Gov. Raimondo who made sure the on-and-off ramps from Route 295 to the Citizens complex become reality and “if it wasn’t for her, there would be no building.”

“If you can remember one acronym – S.O.S. Save our State — by re-electing Governor Raimondo. The members of the JDTC have a reputation that precedes them; that is, we are a committee that rolls up out sleeves and gets the job done,” said Polisena. “So let’s work hard for a September victory then again in November to insure that Gina Raimondo is their working for all of us and all of Rhode Island.”

Polisena then asked the standing room only audience inside the JDTC headquarters at 10 Commerce Way to join him and “welcome OUR Gov. Gina Raimondo” who immediately after being introduced called the group “the biggest, best and most engaging Democratic group in Rhode Island.”

The Governor talked about how she “loves our state” and fact that “I want to continue the work we started four years ago, that’s why I’m running for re-election.”

“I want to finish the job,” she said. “When I first decided to run I did so because I wanted to shake things up. Well, we’ve shaken quite a few things up; it’s working … people are working again … we’ve cut taxes … however, we still have more work to do.”

Raimondo then thanked everyone inside JDTC headquarters and closed by saying “I want to ask you for your support.”

Department of Public Works Director Arnie Vecchione then motioned that the JDTC endorse Gov. Raimondo for her re-election bid, and Anthony Pelosi proposed the second and soon thereafter. There was no opposition.

The JDTC became the first political group in Rhode Island to unanimously endorse the Governor for re-election and as DelFino and Polisena let it be known: “We need Gov. Raimondo to lead us to continued prosperity for all Rhode Islanders.”
