Johnston HOF golf tourney revisited

Posted

“I love doing things like this,” David aRusso, Executive Director of the Johnston Housing Authority, was saying the other day at sun-covered and picturesque Glocester Country Club, “Especially when it benefits our student athletes.”

aRusso was about to tee of in the 3rd Annual Gary V. Mazzie Memorial Golf Tournament, named in memory and honor of the late Johnston High School teacher, coach and athletic director who succumbed to a battle of cancer on Oct. 1, 2015 and who rounded the now prestigious Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was about to play in a foursome with John Graham, who showed up at the lakeside nine-hole layout to raise money to sustain and further promote the JHS Athletic Hall of Fame and as equally important to raise money for the Gary V. Mazzie Memorial Scholarships that were recently presented to 2018 Panther grads Ben Budway, Lauren Civetti and Emily Gaye.

Moreover, the recent tourney read like a “Who’s Who in JHS Sports” and beyond, as members of the school’s first-ever state championship baseball teamed – namely Dave Pisaturo, Scott Moore, Ed Skovron and Mel Steppo – turned out as did one time sports scribe Tim Geary, who schoolboy sports for several weekly papers before moving on to the Fall River Herald.

“The day was a huge success,” Jim Hopkins, a former teacher-coach and Mazzie’s best friend, offered. “We thank people who turned out to help and look forward to an even bigger and better tourney in 2019.”

Anyone who’d like to make a donation to the scholarship fund – or event help the JHS Athletic Hall of Fame – should contact Hopkins via jhshalloffame@gmail.com.
