JPD benefiting from the kindness of local businesses

Add the names Keith DiPetrillo and Superior Lawn Maintenance to the list of area businesses who have given the Johnston Police headquarters a facelift.

It’s a trend that dates back to when a number of local business owners and contractors helped Mayor Joseph Polisena transform the former Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library into its current form.

“This is the best [municipal] courthouse in the state,” Michael DiChiro, the former Johnston Municipal Court Chief Judge – now a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal magistrate – told an appreciative audience during a recent sendoff party.

Johnston resident DiPetrillo, who owns and operates Superior Lawn Maintenance, most recently gave the station’s front garden and lawn several upgrades, including shrubs and mulch.

LOPCO Contractors, which is owned by Thomas J. Lopatosky Jr. of Johnston, previously painted the complete exterior of police headquarters at no charge.

Just recently, Joe Vinagro of Patriot Disposal – who Polisena calls “a great community corporate partner” – made more parking possible for police vehicles by reducing a small hill that was sandwiched between police headquarters and Johnston High School and expanded the police property.

Two weeks ago, DiPetrillo – who learned that the police department was looking to spruce up its front garden area – agreed to do the work at no cost to the town after talking with Deputy Chief Joseph P. Razza.

“It was something that needed to be done,” DiPetrillo noted. “I know the landscaping was a must and the shrubs needed to be removed. So, I agreed to do the project pro bono. Now it’s something everyone in town can be proud of.”

Richard S. Tamburini, the police department’s veteran chief, thanked DiPetrillo.

“This gives our headquarters a completely new look,” he said. “Even the lawn looks like new turf. It offers an entirely new look.”
