DRIVER CITED IN CHRISTMAS EVE CRASH

Johnston Police announced Jan. 10 that Marie E. Rossi, 65, of Cranston was issued three violations following a fatal motor vehicle on Christmas Eve at Plainfield Pike and Peck Hill Road.

Rossi was cited with obedience to a stop sign and vehicle turning left or right/failure to yield right of way. Deputy Chief Joseph Razza specifically noted the violations are not criminal in nature.

Razza said via a press release that the citations were issued to Rossi after officers conducted an on-scene investigation and obtained video surveillance of the crash. Razza added that Rossi will be summoned to the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal some time next month.

Lisa Marshall, a 57-year-old Johnston was transported to Rhode Island Hospital following the crash. She died of her injuries Christmas morning.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Patrolman David T. Slinko Jr. responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident involving a First Student school bus the morning of Jan. 9.

The school bus operator, Slinko said, told him that he stopped the school bus at the intersection, activating the safety lights when the rear of the bus was struck by another vehicle. Slinko said the driver and the nine students on board were not injured. The bus was driven from the scene with minor rear undercarriage damage.

The driver of the vehicle – Lisa Cancelliere, 43, 162 Winsor Ave., Johnston – said she saw the bus stop in the travel lane, applying her brakes to the vehicle when the engine accelerated and the car lurched forward to strike the bus. The vehicle came to rest under the bus.

A Division of Motor Vehicles check revealed Cancelliere was operating with a suspended license. She received a Third Division District Court notice to appear Jan. 27.

Patrolman Merrick A. Cook wrote that on the evening of Jan. 7, Tomas Chajal Castro, 20, 31 Algonquin St., Providence, was involved in a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Hartford Avenue and the Route 6 West ramp where he was the driver of one of the vehicles.

Cook said procedural checks revealed that Castro had no license on file. He was in possession of a Guatemalan ID card, but he said he did not have a valid Rhode Island driver’s license.

Castro was issued a Third Division District Court summons for driving without a license, first offense. He was released to appear on Jan. 13.
