ASSAULT

Patrolman Michael A. Martufi Jr. was dispatched to the Burrillville Police Department on the morning of June 9 to take custody of Martin Raposo, who was arrested on a Johnston Police warrant for a charge of felony assault with a dangerous weapon.

Raposo, 33, 283 Borden Ave., Johnston was released on $10,000 personal recognizance with a pre-arraignment conference date of Sept. 3. Police said the arrest stemmed from an alleged incident on April 16.

A reporting party came to police headquarters on the morning of April 17 to discuss the alleged assault. The man said he was playing in a pool league at The Ave Bar and Grill at 1428 Hartford Ave. when he became involved in a verbal argument with his opponent over the score of the game.

Police said the opponent’s friend – later identified as Raposo – struck him in the face with a closed fist twice. The man said Raposo also picked up a pool stick and hit him in the head. The reporting party said he had to receive 11 stitches for the injury. He also noted that the stick – valued at $800 – struck with enough force to break it.

Just over a week later, on April 25, Detective John D. DeAngelis said he was provided evidence relating to the case. DeAngelis said he was given a pool stick broken in three pieces, which he said he was told the suspect used as a weapon.

RESISTING ARREST

Patrolmen Kevin Lyons and David Galligan were in the area of 525 Killingly St. on the afternoon of June 4 when they observed a vehicle driving south with the front passenger not wearing a seatbelt.

Galligan said he pulled the vehicle over in the Honey Dew Donuts parking lot at 729 Hartford Ave. As the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger exited the car and quickly started to walk west down Hartford Avenue with his head down. Galligan got out of his car and shouted, “Johnston Police, stop!”

Galligan said the man – later identified as David Smith, 23, 18 Grover Ave., Providence – turned his head slightly toward him but continue to walk briskly in front of the Domino’s Pizza. He shouted for the man to stop again, but he then sprinted behind Frisky Fries. The officer radioed his location before chasing after Smith and repeatedly yelling, “Johnston Police, stop running, you’re under arrest.”

Galligan eventually caught up to Smith and placed him in handcuffs. Smith was charged with obstructing an officer in the execution of duty and resisting legal or illegal arrest. A check also found that Smith had two active bench warrants — one from Rhode Island Superior Court for failure to appear for a pre-trial conference and another from Sixth Division District Court for failure to appear for a technical violation.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Patrolman David Galligan was in the area of 960 Galligan St. on the morning of June 3 when he saw a driver who was not wearing his seatbelt.

Galligan detained the vehicle and spoke to the operator, identified as Moises Elivo Trinidad, 24, 191 Reynolds Ave., Providence. Checks revealed the operator’s license was suspended.

Trinidad was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
