Looking forward to meeting you

My name is Alex Sponseller and I am the new sports editor at Beacon Communications.

I am originally from Worcester, Massachusetts and earned my degree in journalism at Worcester State University in 2015.

I then headed north to Biddeford, Maine as a sports writer for the Journal Tribune newspaper. I was later promoted to associate sports editor, which was my title for the past year.

After nearly three years in Biddeford, I decided it was time to make the move back to familiar territory, and I knew southern Rhode Island would be a great fit.

Sports have always been a big part of my life and who I am. I played football and baseball when I was younger and have always been a sports nut in general. It doesn’t matter if it is youth, high school, college, professional, I am all sports all of the time.

I also have a passion for local journalism. There is nothing quite like being part of a strong community that is as invested in its local teams as the players and coaches themselves.

What I enjoy most about this role is getting to become one of those local fans. I love meeting everyone both on and off the field and getting to know what athletics mean to them and those around them. You would be surprised at how much you can learn about a town or region from covering sports.

My ultimate goal for the Warwick Beacon, Cranston Herald and Johnston Sun Rise is to give readers the opportunity to take ownership of the publications.

The press has always been there to inform the public and to provide the community with a forum to shed light on and receive news and information. As much as our sports department will pursue stories, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Whether it is a local team, athlete, event, we want to give you honest and thorough coverage of what you want to see and how you want to see it. Don’t hesitate to reach out. You can find me at 401-732-3100.
