New ‘overhead protector’ to guard Town Hall visitors against falling ice

It was late this past winter when Mayor Joseph Polisena added an important item to his “to-do” list.

“I was walking into Town Hall,” he said, “and I got hit in the head by a falling sheet of ice.”

The sheet came from a portion of the Town Hall roof where sunshine had melted snow, resulting in the creation of ice and what the mayor called a “dangerous situation for anyone coming and going from the building.”

“I didn’t want any ice falling and hitting our constituents or employees,” Polisena said. “I wasn’t injured when the ice fell on me; however, I took quite the hit and didn’t want that happening to anyone who comes to Town Hall.”

On Saturday, Nicholas L. “Nick” Masi, who owns and operates N. Masi Construction Co. at 36 Killian Road in Johnston, was at Johnston Town Hall to build what he called an “overhead protector” over the rear door entrance.

The overhead protector is just one of many important safety projects that Polisena has made during his administration, beginning with upgrading both entrances as well as installing a handicap ramp with a steel railing and an elevator that lifts people in wheelchairs and those with physical disabilities up to the main floor.

“Now,” Polisena said, “the ice that forms during the winter months won’t be falling on anyone that visits Johnston Town Hall.”
