Night of food, comedy to support firefighter's family

If you like homemade Italian food and plenty of it, next Thursday’s fundraiser is the place to be.

Spirito’s Restaurant, located inside the Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post 2812 at 1418 Plainfield Pike, will play host to an extraordinary event next Thursday, April 25.

The gathering will benefit Johnston Fire Department Rescue Lt. Adam Barros and his family, who lost their Glocester home in a fire on March 20.

Since then, Johnstonians by the hundreds – from school children to town employees and business owners – have joined firefighters around the state in pledging their support to help the Barros family rebuild their lives and, hopefully, their home.

The brothers Spirito, Greg and David, have pledged their wholehearted support, and their business is one of many co-sponsoring next Thursday’s Funny 4 Funds benefit.

Moreover, Greg Spirito is a former member of the Johnston Fire Department and would like nothing more than to sell out the 250-seat dining room at the Kelley-Gazzerro Post next Thursday night.

“We are indeed hoping for a standing-room-only crowd to help our brother Adam,” said Richard Boehm, a Johnston Fire battalion chief and training officer who is chairing the ambitious event. “Funny 4 Funds is a dinner/comedy show for adults only that promises plenty of laughs and many chances to win valuable prizes and more.”

Boehm said doors will open at 6 p.m. with the buffet dinner being served at 7 p.m. The comedy show – headlined by Mike “The Deaf Comic” Murray, Bill Simas and Brad Pierce – will follow.

“The dinner buffet will be phenomenal,” Boehm said, announcing the menu will include Spirito’s famed pasta and meatballs, sausage and pepper, salad, vegetables, bread and butter, coffee and, of course, dessert.

The raffle, Boehm said, will include gift certificates to many of Rhode Island’s best restaurants as well as wine, liquor and beer baskets.

There will also be a silent auction that will include sports memorabilia, framed prints and other items. A live auction will feature an autographed Boston Bruins jersey from Johnston’s own Noel Acciari, who pledged his support for the Barros family.

“Having Noel’s autographed Bruins jersey will be the highlight for the live auction,” Boehm said.
