The Johnston Panthers blanked the Pilgrim Patriots 6-0 in Division III boys tennis on Tuesday afternoon at Pilgrim High School.

“It was a good team win,” Johnston head coach Ryan Barrett said.

Panthers junior Josh Brien defeated Justin Walker, a senior, 6-3, 6-3 during the No. 1 singles match.

Next, in the No. 2 singles bout, Johnston’s Nick Gallo, a senior, beat Antonio Riccio, a junior, 6-2, 6-2.

During the No. 3 singles contest, junior Joel Aubin beat Alex Ferolito, a freshman, 6-1, 6-2.

Lastly, Panthers senior Evan Zanni beat Brandon Major, also a senior, 6-0, 6-3 during the No. 4 singles match.

Johnston’s Connor Agnew and Zach Zambarano won the No.1 doubles match by forfeit while Seth Reth and Greg Manni also triumphed in the No. 2 doubles match by forfeit.

The Panthers improve their regular season record to 3-7 and Pilgrim drops to 0-9.

Johnston played at Rotary Park in Westerly on Wednesday afternoon, but the score was unavailable at press time. The Panthers play their next game on Tuesday at Burrillville (6-3) at 4 p.m.

Pilgrim coach Daniel Robinson has been proud of his team’s effort this season, despite its 0-9 record.

“At the beginning of the season, we played the completion that we had very close,” Robinson explained. “We lost to Central 3-2. We played Cranston East really hard. We lost to them 5-2, but we very well could have beat them 4-3. And we lost to Woonsocket 5-2.”

“So, they have held their own,” Robinson said. “They’re warriors. I can never question their effort. They’re always battling, learning, and improving. There is definite growth that we’ve had over the season, and as long as I am seeing them growing and learning the game, it’s a successful season.”
