Parkland school survivors to visit East as part of book tour

February 14, 2018 will be remembered by many as the day when 17 staff and students from Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were killed in a mass shooting, and many others were injured. The shooting differed from those school shootings in the more recent past, as it sparked a movement started by the survivors that has only gained momentum as time has gone by.

“March For Our Lives,” became a protest, a plea for change, from the surviving students, their families and friends, and it inspired significant events all across the country as the topics of gun violence, gun safety, and gun laws remain prevalent in the news.

One month later, on March 14, 2018, students from Cranston schools participated in a variety of memorial events, including marches, memorial moments of silence, and protests at both Cranston High Schools East and West.

Now, on Wednesday, Oct. 17, the founding members of the “March for Our Lives” movement will visit Cranston as Barrington Books hosts a moderated conversation in conjunction with the release of the survivors’ book Glimmer of Hope: How Tragedy Sparked a Movement.

The event will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Cranston High School East in the auditorium.

According to a press release courtesy of Barrington Books, “‘Glimmer of Hope’ tells the story of how a group of teenagers raced to channel their rage and sorrow into action, and went on to create one of the largest youth-led movements in global history.”

There will be two options for tickets for the event. Ticket A: a $20.00 ticket which includes a copy of the book “Glimmer of Hope,” and admission to a meet and greet line following the event, and Ticket B: which is free for children under the age of 18 and college students with active I.D. Ticket B will require proof of age/or active college ID. Admission to event only. 100% of the authors’ proceeds will benefit the March for Our Lives Foundation and the ongoing fight for gun violence prevention in the United States.

A selection of the original founders from “March for Our Lives” will be in attendance at the event on October 17.

The full list of contributors, in alphabetical order, are: Adam Alhanti, Dylan Baierlein, John Barnitt, Alfonso Calderon, Sarah Chadwick, Jaclyn Corin, Matt Deitsch, Ryan Deitsch, Sam Deitsch, Brendan Duff, Emma González, Chris Grady, David Hogg, Lauren Hogg, Cameron Kasky, Jammal Lemy, Charlie Mirsky, Kyrah Simon, Delaney Tarr, Bradley Thornton, Kevin Trejos, Naomi Wadler, Sofie Whitney, Daniel Williams and Alex Wind.
