Patriots read to McGuire

The students at McGuire Elementary School in Johnston got a treat last week, as New England Patriots offensive lineman Ted Karras and Patriots cheerleader Ashlee Bourque made an appearance as part of their Read Between the Lines campaign.

Karras and Bourque read a few books to the students, and would later answer some questions from the kids and faculty regarding reading, football and life.

“It’s great, the reading with kids is awesome and the enthusiasm with the kids. Meeting a pro football player is pretty special so to be that guy is fun. I think I may get more out of it than they do,” said Karras, who also applauded the efforts of the Kraft family to give back to the greater New England area. “The Kraft organization is first class all around, so to be a small part of it and to give back to New England, as a part of that organization is very special and a special opportunity,” said Karras.

Multiple students asked for his thoughts regarding the recent retirement of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who Karras admitted that he will miss next season.

“He’s in unbelievable football player and person. He’s a great friend to me and I can’t wait to see what he does. He has a life of adventure in front of him. The way he handled his football career, he’s very special. Can’t say anything but good (about him),” said Karras.

Bourque was also happy to spend time with the local children, and appreciates the opportunity to serve as a role model as well.

“Being part of the New England Patriots organization, you have so many opportunities to volunteer in the community and this is actually one of my favorite events in the year ... working with the kids in being a good role model, I love working with the children and giving back to the community,” said Bourque.
