“We’re number one,” said the kids who represented the Pepin Lumber Company were shouting the other day after wrapping up the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department’s third and fourth drade division basketball championship.

“We had 10 kids contribute to this team,” Coach Chris Cherry said while Jamie Ricci, who like Cherry had a son that played on the team, offered, “We’re thrilled for the kids, they worked hard all season.”

The newly-crowned champions’ roster included Chris Cherry, Jayden Ponte, Xavior Vicente, Steve Palardy, Diego Medoza, Giovanni Johnston, Aiden Neil, Luca Ricci, Lyalo Harrison and Fotis Fotopoulos.

The league, which is designed to afford youngsters an opportunity to begin learning and playing the highly-popular game of basketball at a young age, is sponsored and coordinated annually by the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department under the leadership of long-time director and former Johnston High School and Bryant University star Dan Mazzulla.

Mazzulla is also a member of the prestigious JHS and Bryant University Halls of Fame.
