Sparks take home rec league crown

Back when the Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School girls’ basketball team closed out its season vs. area-rival Scituate, there were lots of super smiles and embraces by the players and coaches on both squads.

One reason, in particular, was as Lisa Calabro – who coordinated the heart-warming super sendoff for the Ferri Jaguars – recently explained was that many of the girls from both teams play together in other area basketball and softball clubs.

Such was the case when Calabro and David Allen served as co-coaches of the LA Sparks in the Johnston-Scituate Recreation Department Basketball League Girls Division for players in grades seven and eight and brought home the championship.

“We ended the season with the No. 1 seed going into the playoffs,” Calabro noted after her super squad finished with an 8-5 record as compared to the 7-6 mark of the Seattle Storm. “Here’s a special salute to the Storm on their great season.”

The game was played at Scituate High School earlier this month.

Members of the championship club are: Hannah Calabro, Ava Waterman, Michelina Irons, Aubree Allen, Kaylee Poole and Talia LaFlamme.
