Par excellence!

That’s probably the best way to describe Monday’s 2nd Annual Our Lady of Grace Church Golf Tournament which was played at posh Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington in memory of the late and loved golf pro Fred Bruno.

In short, the organizing committee left no stone unturned and as a result, 120 golfers teed off for a day of fun, food, fellowship, golf and prizes plus that wound up raising $5,000 for Johnston-based Roman Catholic Parish and Fred Bruno Foundation.

Bruno, who was the renowned golf pro at RICC for three decades before his passing back on March 15, 2015, was the brother of committee member and OLG parishioner Carolyn Najmowicz who helped OLG produce one of its most successful events ever Monday.

There was a spiffy 2019 Buick Encore Sport SUV for a person who could sink a hole-in-one on RICC’s tenth hole, the same hole that has become famous when Barrington hosts the prestigious CVS Charity Classic in June.

There was a wonderful pre-tee off buffet luncheon that consisted of ham, roast beef and turkey, cheeses, pasta salad, potato chips, fruit salad and brownies for desert and a post-tourney awards dinner featuring salad bar, hot grilled vegetables, mashed potato bar, grilled NY strip steak, grilled salmon and a hot fudge brownie Sunday dessert.

There were 35 high quality prizes like a Kathy Ireland Home Putting Game, Eco-Chef Toaster Oven, Oneida Bowl Set, Farberware Oil-Less Fryer and man food and wine baskets that were all nicely wrapped and on display throughout the benefit event.

“The lunch and dinner was amazing,” Rev. Peter J. Gower, the popular pastor at OLG, said. “The raffle prizes seemed endless and this is event and that everyone should consider joining.”

Father Gower, who played in Monday’s tourney with his niece Caitlin Marino, also wanted it known, “Our congratulations to the winners of the putting contest, hole in one contest, longest drive and closest to the pin. This tourney was another success but really the fundraiser was a bonus because the event was the game itself and fun we all had in our teams.”

The team of Joe Grasso, Al Verdeccia, Aj Tassoni and Harry Salsi took top honors in the scramble format with a 59 and won $100 each. Second place was won by Tony Lema, Brad McCaffrey, John Know and Dean Dgong with a 65 while third place went to Jon Smith, Dan Cregan, Craig Fisher and David Acciardo at 63.

Caitlin Marino, Father Gower’s niece, won closest the pin on number five, Mark Capaldi won at No. 10 and Al Verdeccia took honors on No. 17. Paul Sozeck won the longest drive for men and JoAnne McGuire took honors for the ladies.
