MOTHER CHARGED WITH ABUSE

Tina Marie Tucker, 36, of 12 Forest Hill Drive in Johnston, is being charged by the Johnston Police Department with cruelty to or neglect of a child and child abuse in the first degree, both felony charges.

On December 6, 2018, members of the Johnston Police Department responded to Rhode Island Hospital and spoke with hospital staff who indicated that Tucker’s son had ingested cocaine within the previous 24 to 48 hours.

Based on a joint investigation with members from the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and Detectives from the JPD, an arrest warrant was prepared and signed by a judge, and Tucker was later arrested.

Through the course of the preliminary investigation conducted by Detectives, there was probable cause to also charge Tucker with the procurement of sexual conduct for a fee, a misdemeanor charge.

ON THE PHONE

On December 3 at approximately 1:50 p.m., Officer Michael Schiappa reported that he observed a silver Nissan Maxima traveling east with the driver holding a cell phone to his ear. A traffic stop was then conducted in the area of 920 Plainfield Street.

Upon making contact with the driver, later identified as Justin Veveiros, 26, of 131 Earl Street in Central Falls, he allegedly admitted that he was talking on his cell phone and was not aware that it was illegal to use a mobile phone without a hands free device while driving.

A background check revealed that Veveiros has a suspended license and an active West Warwick Police Department warrant for crank and or obscene phone calls. He was placed under arrest and transported to Police Headquarters where he was processed and issued a District Court summons to appear for driving on a suspended license, third offense. He later was picked up by a member of the West Warwick Police Department.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

While on patrol in the area of Plainfield Street at Spruce Street on December 4 around 9:50 p.m., Lieutenant Joseph Salvadore followed a car as it traveled west at approximately 55 miles per hour in a 30 mile pre hour zone. The car was then detained in the area of Plainfield Street at Angelico Street, and contact was made with the driver, identified as Thera Omeara, 35, of 68 Drozdyk Road in Groton, Conn.

While speaking with Omeara regarding her speed, the officer reported that he smelt a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her breath. When asked if she had anything to drink that evening, Omeara allegedly responded “I had two drinks before I left, I’m going to pick up child support money, and the drinks calm me down.” She then agreed to partake in a series of standardized sobriety tests.

Based upon her performance during testing and the officer’s experience and training, it was determined that Omeara was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely. She was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for processing.

At the station, Omeara refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test. She was searched, and a small bag containing a plantlike substance, later positively testes as marijuana, was found. She was issued a citation for speeding, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and possession of marijuana. She was later released with a Third District Court summons.

PORCH PIRATE APPREHENDED

With the assistance of the public, the Johnston Police have made an arrest in a larceny of packages from the front porch of a Custer Avenue resident.

On November 27, 2018, a Custer Avenue, resident reported a theft from their front doorstep and provided video surveillance to members of the Johnston Police that aided in the investigation. Using various social media outlets, the suspect’s identity was learned and she was positively identified as Ms. Miosotys Rios, 25, of 119 Silver Lake Avenue, Apt #2 in Providence.

Rios was taken into custody on December 7 and is being charged with one count of misdemeanor larceny. Rios was given a District Court summons to appear at the Kent County Court House on December 17 to answer to the charge. The Johnston Police would like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying the suspect.
