FELONY ASSAULT

Patrolman Kevin Lyons responded to Johnston Police headquarters the afternoon of Nov. 8 to process Jesse Adams, 41, 18 Nancy Court, Coventry.
Adams turned himself in on a charge of felony assault with a dangerous weapon and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Adams was later arraigned and released on $5,000 personal recognizance with a pre-arraignment conference scheduled for Feb. 5, 2020.
Adams’ arrest stems from an alleged incident that took place the afternoon of Nov. 7. Patrolman Robert H. Cardoza responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon involving a motor vehicle, and upon arrival he said he spoke with the victim. The victim said he had engaged in an ongoing text conversation with Adams throughout the day, and the messages became more aggressive.
The man said that when he and another person returned to the redacted address, Adams was waiting on the north side of the business. Both he and Adams exited their vehicles and had a verbal argument. When the argument concluded, though, Cardoza said the man told him Adams reentered his vehicle and began to accelerate at him at a high rate of speed.
The man told Cardoza he was forced to jump out of the vehicle’s path to avoid being struck, and stated that Adams continued on his path and struck his vehicle with such force that it was pushed five feet from its position. Cardoza said that, on the scene, there were tire tracks on the property consistent with the man’s statements that led from where Adams was initially parked to the moment of impact. Cardoza noted the incident took place in a very large parking lot and Adams had ample space to exit.

FARE EVASION

Patrolmen Adam M. Parkinson and Derick Ofori responded to Bel-Air Motor Inn at 2154 Hartford Ave. the morning of Nov. 12 for a report of evasion of a cab fare.
Upon their arrival, Parkinson said they spoke with the cab driver and complainant. The man said he picked up a man later identified as Michael Norman Shottek, 41, 654 Manton Ave., Providence, in Providence that evening and drove him to the motel. Michael instructed the driver to pull to the rear of the building upon arrival and indicated that his room was on the back side. The driver said he was hesitant to do so because of the close quarters, but agreed and did so anyway.
Parkinson said the driver told him that, when he appraised Shottek of his $44.46 fare, he attempted to abruptly exit the locked vehicle without paying, and then said, “I gotta go get it … it’s in my room.” The driver said he explicitly advised Shottek that he needed to leave and ID or his phone as collateral if he was going to retrieve the money elsewhere.
However, Shottek hastily exited the cab without leaving any collateral and walked toward the front of the building. The man told Parkinson he exited his vehicle and followed Shottek, who entered a room and shut the door. He said he knocked several times to no avail and then contacted the police.
Parkinson said he knocked loudly on the door for some time and received no response. Once Shottek finally opened the door, he said he was sleeping and Parkinson immediately inquired as to whether or not Shottek intended to pay for his cab ride.
Shottek told Parkinson that he was under the impression that his “boy” paid for the ride and advised that he didn’t have any money. Shottek was charged with obtaining vehicles with intent to defraud (taxi fare), and a check revealed he also had an active Superior Court bench warrant stemming from a Pawtucket Police Department arrest for possession of a stolen motor vehicle or parts.
