“This lesson in caring and giving was far from SADD,” Greg Russo, a long-time teacher who heads the Chemistry Department at Johnston High School, deadpanned Monday afternoon. “Our SADD students were able to provide three families with a complete Christmas and had a great time having the opportunity to spread cheer during the holiday season.”
Russo, who doubles as the JHS Faculty Advisor for SADD (Students Against Dangerous Decisions) and the highly-active Student Council, received a list of families in need that the Lauren Messa led group later adopted then went shopping to make Christmas merry for three families.
It was all part of an on-going program between SADD and the Tri-Town Community Action Agency that recently provided Russo with a confidential list of families and their children in need.
“The list was provided to our (SADD) students with included their ages, sizes, and some of the gifts their children were hoping to receive,” Russo said. “Then, the SADD students went shopping and personally purchased gifts for those families in need. A special thanks to all the students who participated.”
The SADD students, Russo emphasized, purchased sleepwear, a sweatshirt, toys games and a stocking.
