They’ve been referred to as super scholars, scientists, and the select six.

Robin Fidel, Megan Philbrick, Madisyn Turcotte, David Iannuccilli, Ivan Hernandez and Nick Petrella are the pride of Johnston High School’s 2019 Science Fair and were awarded blue ribbon certificates for their respective first place finishes.

They’re also members of the classes of 2019 and 2020 who will represent Johnston High School in the highly competitive Rhode Island State Science Fair, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17, at the Community College of Rhode Island Knight Campus in Warwick.

“We’re proud of all our students,” said Greg Russo, a veteran Johnston High School chemistry teacher who chairs the annual Science Fair. “The students really did a great job and made the judge’s decisions difficult at best.”

Russo said the 2019 Science Fair is a requirement for all college preparatory freshmen and sophomores as well as upperclassmen in an honors or AP-level science course.

He further explained that the Feb. 7 Science Fair featured 143 projects and gave students the opportunity to put the scientific method to work in a hands-on fashion. A total of 24 students won awards for first, second and third place and honorable mention. (Text by Pete Fontaine)
