SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO
* * *
Benicio Del Toro plays hitman Alejandro, as violence and mayhem continues in the drug wars between the Mexican cartels. Always in the background pulling strings and making questionably immoral decisions is government agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin).
There are terrorist attacks that somehow are connected to the drug cartels. Graver and Alejandro are hired to disrupt the cartel activities by kidnapping a cartel leader's daughter (Isabel Reyes) and making it look like she was taken by one of his rivals. This pits cartel against cartel.
After a slow start, the movie takes off in a wild chase near the Mexico-Texas border. At times it is difficult to determine who are the good and bad guys. The plot twists a bit as a teenage mule becomes involved, leading to a bloody, chaotic finale and one surprising final scene.
While the movie is both topical and exciting, it's a bit too bloody and cynical for us.
Rated a strong R, with lots of violence and profanity.
