Students take top honors in statewide safety contest

Five students from St. Rocco School were finalists, with two of them winning top slots in a statewide safety contest.

Eighth graders Naja Sasa, Michael Bittner and Daniella Ferranti, and fifth graders Amabelle Francois and Sarah Michael, all participated in the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency's School Safety Program's "Gear Up for Safety" art contest. The students and the school were notified over the summer that the five were finalists in the contest and were honored this month during National School Safety Week at an award ceremony held at Warwick Mall.

Bittner ultimately was the overall contest winner and was awarded an iPad2 as his prize. Ferranti placed top overall in her age category, winning a $100 savings bond.

The students' winning artwork was made into a calendar and is also currently on display at Warwick Mall.
