Family event coming to Memorial Park to benefit Meeting Street School

On July 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Johnston Memorial Park, there will be a Charity Car, Truck & Bike Show, Motorcycle Run and Sneaker Swap - Sneaker Rodeo of RI. The event is free and fun for the whole family. Hosted by hosted by DJ Car Guy Rich George and George Arakelian, Jr. from A Custom Car Stereo Center, all funds raised will benefit Meeting St. School.

The Bike Run, hosted by the Screaming Eagles, will begin with kickstands up at 11 a.m. to the Music Lady in Connecticut and return to the park by 2 p.m. Registration fee is $15 and for more information contact Emo Sabitoni at 230-4357. 

The Charity Car, Truck & Bike Show welcomes all makes and models with a $15 registration fee and there will be more than 60 trophies and special awards which include the Mayor & Chief of Police Choice Awards. For more information, contact George Arakelian III at 300-4291.

Also contact Arakelian for the Sneaker Swap - Sneaker Rodeo of RI. Entry fee is $10 Buy, Trade, Sell Sneakers with an entry fee of $10 (pre-sale) and $15 the day of event with a start time of 11 a.m. Included that day will be a 50/50 Raffle, raffles, vendors, bounce house, food and music. Table rentals are available at $60 each. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be available for a $1 donation.

Bowl-A-Thon to benefit animals

Sponsored by Defenders of Animals, a Bowl-A-Thon will be held on July 23 from 2 to 4 p.m., which includes two hours of bowling at Town Hall Lanes, 1463 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a pizza and a pitcher of soda for each lane. Call Defenders of Animals for reservations at 461-1922 or send an email to defendersofanimals@msn.com.

Take a chance to benefit the homeless

Mae Organization for the Homeless is celebrating its founder’s birthday on August 15, by giving away $1,000. Spend just $10 for the opportunity to turn it into $1,000. This is a virtual fundraiser, allowing anyone around the world to participate! All proceeds from this fun giveaway will be going toward their holistic programs for our homeless clients.

The mission of Mae Organization, Inc. is to operate on a Mind, Body, Spirit wellness program model which empowers and compassionately supports our homeless demographic through expressive arts and holistic modalities in the healing of mental illness and substance abuse. Expressive Arts Programs in conjunction with clinical medicine have been proven extremely effective worldwide in hospitals and other healing centers in the healing process of aids, cancers, alcohol and drug abuse cases.

Mae Organization uses these holistic healing therapeutic modalities as their platform to work supportively and compassionately with our homeless clients in finding their inner voiceless child. They are currently raising funds to purchase a transportation vehicle and open their Wellness Center.

Garden City Concert

Series in Cranston

The Garden City Concert Series will continue at the Gazebo on July 19 the stage is set for Steve Smith & The Nakeds. On July 26 Red Hot Horns will perform, followed by the URI Jazz Band on Aug. 2. Superchief Trio will perform on Aug. 9. The series will wrap on with Nicolas King with special guest Angela Bacari on Aug. 16. All concerts are free and held at the gazebo from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

At the Mohr Library

Time for Zombies! On July 26, a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Workshop will be held at 4 p.m. With the backdrop of a Zombie Apocalypse, every teen will get hands on experience learning exciting survival skills.  Skills covered include: basic first aid and how to make first aid kits & an emergency bag, learn to shoot a real crossbow (with safe foam- tipped arrows designed for indoors), knots and lashings, emergency shelter and camp construction. On Aug. 10, the Mohr Library will present PCFF Teen Filmmaking Workshop at 6 p.m. Film is a medium that most teens have a lot of experience with, but mostly in being a passive viewer. The PCFF will introduce teens to film and media literacy language and concepts before and after showcasing an independent short film, and end with a filmmaking activity based on the “Build A Better World” theme, which will eventually link with teens in the other PCFF Summer Reading Program sessions. Teens will transform from passive to active viewers and media makers before your eyes! Our presentation will be part audience participation (pre- and post-screening discussion), part demonstration (film screening/active viewing), and part hands-on workshop (media-making of collaborative film project). 20 spaces available so registration required; contact Emilie to register Mohr.teen.librarian@gmail.com.

Page to Stage for Teens will be presented every Thursday beginning June 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. Page to Stage is a workshop for teens that will be run by Kevin Broccoli, their fiction specialist and local theatre artist. There is no cost for participating, everything will be supplied No commitment week to week. Registration is encouraged, but drop-ins welcome. Workshop content will largely depend on the interest of the teens in attendance. It will likely be a little different each week. They will be learning to write their own scripts, read them, and act them out. Teens can take on different roles, so if they only want to write or if they only want to act, they can. If they are interested there may be script analysis, or reading classic plays. This is an open, flexible program for the teens to learn, experiment, and have fun.

On Thursday, Aug. 10 there will be a special program at 6 p.m. where the Providence Children’s Film Festival will come to host a teen film program. They will learn about different film equipment & techniques, then they will create their own film. There are 25 spaces available and registration required.

Help make a house a home

The Furniture Bank of RI, a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation, needs bureaus, complete twin or double beds, kitchen sets, mattresses and other household furniture that you no longer need. To help a less fortunate family through your charitable donation of good used furniture, call 831-5511 to arrange for pick up. All donated articles must be in good condition.

Volunteers needed

The Johnston Senior Center is seeking volunteers to help with various services throughout the year. They need volunteers on Thursday afternoon bingo and Friday night bingo. The Activity Department is also in need of volunteers for dining room servers and gift shop associates. Contact the Center at 944-3343.
