Bowling Fundraiser to help the homeless, impoverished

Help the Homeless RI will be holding a Bowling Fundraiser on Saturday, June 16  from 8 to 10 p.m. The event will be held at Town Hall Lanes located at 1463 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. For $20, guests will receive 2 hours of bowling, rental of bowling shoes, pizza and soda. Vendors wanted for a Yard Sale at the Kelly Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, 1418 Plainfield St., Cranston, on June 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is $20 for each table. To secure a spot or if you need more information please call Lillian at 829-6080.

Johnston Historical Society

The Johnston Historical Society’s Museum Barn is open Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 2 to5 p.m.; or by appointment, for those who would like to visit the museum or examine the society's collection of printed materials. Just in case, call ahead to confirm they are there. Dues are $20 per year for an individual, $30 per year for a family (two adults and children under 18) membership. The purpose of the JHS is to identify, preserve and promote the history of our town. It is located at 101 Putnam Pike in Johnston and can be reached by calling 231-3380.

A Tribute to Frankie Valli

The Johnston Senior Center will host “A Tribute to Frankie Valli” with a dinner and a show featuring Michael Panarello on June 2. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and showtime is 7:45 p.m. There will be beer, wine, cheese, crackers and a light fare will be provided. The Senior Center is located at 1291 Hartford Ave.

New to the Artists’ Exchange and Theater 82

Fun and Funny - ad-lib comedy theater which is presented by the Almanac Drops will be featured every Thursday at 8 p.m. Each performance follows a workshop with the Artists’ Exchange Comedy Troupe. Pay what you can admission with a suggested donation of $5 per person at the door. Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Sq. in Cranston.

At the Mohr for children

Storytime will begin again on May 8 and offer stories, songs and rhymes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their caregivers. Held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for all ages, Storytime starts at 10:30 a.m. There is no need to register.

Saturday Drop-In Crafts are held when the Mohr Library is open. Come anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for several self-directed projects for kids and parents to do together. (Craft programs are not appropriate for children under 3 as small parts might present a hazard.)

Lego Club meets every second Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Play with LEGO bricks donated by LEGO Systems. Ages 5 and up. No registration required.

I SPY is held anytime when the library is open. Play I Spy Pokémon, I Spy Pete the Cat or three other I Spy games that a talented volunteer has made for you and get a sticker for each one. All ages.

The Mohr Library offers discount passes to several fun places in and around the state. These passes have been donated by the Friends of Mohr Library. For more information, call 231-4980, and press 5 for the children's room.

Ongoing Book Sale at the Mohr

Looking for a book to relax with? You'll find more than a few at the Friends of Mohr Library's ongoing book sale.

The friendly bookshelves in the hallway on the lower level of the library have been filled with lots of gently used books for sale, thanks to recent donations from local book lovers. Open daily during regular library hours, you can find something for everyone: children, young adults, and lovers of mystery, romance, science fiction, sports, biography, cookbooks, etc.

The Friends, a non-profit volunteer group dedicated to the library, helps to support special services and library programs through memberships, donations, and fundraising efforts. Email address is friends@mohrlibrary.com.

Garden City Shopping Center seeks historic photos

Garden City Center is turning 70 in 2018, and a big celebration is being planned for later this year, but they need help from the public. Specifically, Garden City Center is looking for historic photographs that people across Rhode Island may have of the stores, sites and experiences they’ve enjoyed at the shopping center since 1948.

“We have some historic photos of Garden City Center, dating back to when it first opened, but we’re really looking for those candid shots that people may have taken with their old film cameras over the years,” said Janice Pascone, Garden City Center director of marketing.  “Hopefully people might look in old photo albums, drawers or the attic to see what they have and to lend them to us for use in our 70th anniversary celebration. We’ll be sharing historic photos through social media as well.”

Those who have photos and would like to share them with Garden City Center can do so by bringing them to the Management Office for immediate scanning– located at 100 Midway Road, Suite 14 Cranston RI 02920 or by mailing them to the same address. Electronic photos can be emailed to jpascone@wilderco.com. Deadline for submission is June 1. All photographs will be returned.

Memorial Day is upon us. The holiday was long known as Decoration Day for the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. The name Memorial Day goes back to 1882, but the older name didn't disappear until after World War II. Federal law declared "Memorial Day" the official name in 1967.
