Chopstick Auction to benefit Veterans

The Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post #2812 Auxiliary will be having a Chopstick Auction on Oct. 28 at their Post, located at 1418 Plainfield St., Cranston, from noon until 4:00 p.m.

There are no tickets for the events and funds raised are through the sale of chopsticks at the door.

It is an annual fundraiser and their most successful. Each chopstick, which has a 3 digit number and a corresponding chip that goes into a tumbler, is $20. Your chip will be in all the raffles and they usually have more than 100 raffles. 

You can purchase as many Chopsticks as you like to sweeten your odds-on great raffles. They will also have finger foods and a cash bar.

Bowl for the Animals

Defenders of Animals will sponsor a night of bowling at Town Hall Lanes, located at 1463 Atwood Ave., in Johnston, on Oct. 28 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Donation price is $20 per person and includes two hours of bowling, a pizza and pitcher of soda for each lane. Call Defenders of Animals at 401-461-1922.

Pink Ribbon Bagel continues this month at Panera Bread

Howley Bread Group, a franchisee of Panera Bread, is once again partnering with the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation during its 17th annual ‘Pink Ribbon Bagel’ promotion. Throughout the month of October, to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a portion of proceeds from all Pink Ribbon Bagels sold in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts will go to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, a Pawtucket-based non-profit. Pink Ribbon Bagels are baked fresh daily in each Panera Bread café, formed by hand into a ribbon shape, and feature dried cherries, cranberries, vanilla, honey, and brown sugar.

Networking at Twin Oaks

There will be a special networking event at Twin Oaks on Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., organized by Pat Cruz Events. Johnston Historical Society in October

On Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m. join the Historical Society as they welcome Donovan K. Loucks, creator of the H.P. Lovecraft Archive website, who will give a presentation on Lovecraftian Geography. For more information, contact the Johnston Historical Society at (401) 231-3380.

Free Shred Day

There will be a Free Shred Day, hosted by The Washington Trust Company on Oct. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Washington Trust building at 645 Reservoir Ave. in Cranston and at the Washington Trust building at 1383 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. Bring a canned good to benefit local food pantries.

There is a 2-box maximum per person to be shred and all paper, including: invoices, timecards, contracts, tax returns, insurance records, legal documents, leases, computer printouts, customer lists, sales figures, sealed bids, statements, balance sheets, personnel records, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc. Staples, rubber bands, folders, paper clips do not need to be removed. Ms. and Jr. Miss Wheelchair applications now being accepted

Do you have what it takes to be the next Ms. or Jr Miss wheelchair Rhode Island? Must be 5-15 years of age for Jr. Miss and 21 years or older for Ms. and for both categories, applicants much use a wheelchair 100% of the time in public.

This is not a beauty pageant, but rather a competition of advocacy, education and making a difference, empowering the state to make positive change. Send an email to Tina Pederson at Mswheelchairri2018@yahoo.com for more information and applications. Competition will be Feb. 2 or 3 in Providence.

Book Sales

‘Members of the Friends’ plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow Mohr Library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues, or through volunteering their time. There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and young adults. Most prices range from $.25 to $2. The Friends are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated and can be left at the library's main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.

Exciting programming for children at the Mohr Library

Halloween story times for babies, toddlers and preschoolers when children are encouraged to come in costume and caregivers may bring snacks or drinks if they wish will be held on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 at 10:30 a.m.

Science Club for Grades K-3 will focus on experimenting with luminescence and glow in the dark fun on Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. with Registration Required by calling 401-231-4980 x5 and on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. the club will focus on building a rocket and racing it against other participants.

On Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m., children will be able to build a catapult. Try building the different models of catapults to find which works best.

On the second Thursdays: Oct. 11 and Nov. 8 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. come build with 10, 000 plus Lego bricks, donated by Lego Systems. Ages 5 and up with an adult. No need to register.

Drop-In Family Crafts will be held every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from now through the end of June. This will feature several self-directed projects for children and parents to do together. (Craft Programs are not appropriate for children under 3 as small parts might present a hazard.)

There will be a Halloween BOOtique to benefit Help The Homeless RI on Oct. 27 at 11:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. at the Kelley Gazzerro VFW 2812, located at 1418 Plainfield Pike, Cranston. Shop for Halloween goodies or get an early start on Christmas shopping. Face painting and games for the kids, shopping and raffles for the adults. Fun for everyone and all money raised supports Help the Homeless RI.

At the Mohr for Teens

Teen Arts & Crafts Club will meet every Thursday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Love arts & crafts? Join in each week to make something new and express yourself. We will paint, collage, draw, sculpt, and use paper, textiles, natural objects and recyclables to create all different works to take home. Each week make something new, 20 spaces are available. Teen Dungeons & Dragons Club will be held every Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Dungeons & Dragons for Teens is a cooperative role-playing game recently made famous in Stranger Things. Teens create their own characters & play out a story together. We will be beginning a new storyline called Storm King’s Thunder, where adventurers battle giants. Teen Chess Club will meet every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Mohr.  Join them for the classic strategy game Chess. Battle your friends or test your wits against the librarian! Don’t know how to play? No problem they can teach you! The rules are simple, the opportunities endless. Practice all your strategies here while relaxing away from the heat. 20 spaces available.
