THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS

(Delightful fairy tale)

This delightful Disney fairy tale has been criticized for not being like the classic ballet. Well, it is not the classic ballet, it is a fantasy that has many elements included in Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite.

Joyce and I were enthralled with the story, messages, performances, colors and characters created in this lovely movie that is yet another tale of female empowerment and should be a favorite for young girls.

Mackenzie Foy plays Clara, the young girl who, along with her father, is mourning her mother's death. It is Christmas Eve. Clara had been given a mysterious egg by her mother, but has not found the "key" to opening it. Guided by her godfather (Morgan Freeman), she follows a path that leads her to a magical snowy wonderland ruled by Sugarplum (Keira Knightley).

Clara learns that her mother (Helen Mirren) had led the realm, but was banished. There is a fight for power, with Clara fighting Sugarplum and her army of tin soldiers. The colors and backgrounds are beautiful and the fantasy spreads throughout the realm, as Clara learns what her mother was teaching her. Clara eventually wakes up and they all live happily ever after.

Tchaikovsky's music is heard in the background and Misty Copeland does have an opportunity to show her ballet skills. This one is pure fantasy and will help put the young ones in the Christmas spirit.

Rated PG.
