Wildlife meadow part of Johnston bike path clean up

Posted

Johnston businesses, groups and friends of the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) will clean up the Johnston Gateway along the Woonasquatucket River Greenway. Hillside Avenue Fall Clean Day, part of WRWC’s Clean Days on the Greenway series, will take place Saturday, October 21 from 10 am until 2 pm at 1 Hillside Avenue in Johnston.

Fall clean-up activities will include litter sweeps, sprucing up the bike path, and in-water cleanups, as well as other improvements such as planting and restoring a meadow.

In July, both Mayor Polisena of Johnston and Mayor Lombardi of North Providence came out to celebrate a WRWC Clean Day at Cricket Field with the Hasbro Kids Klub. WRWC expects more youth to help on October 21. These activities help improve and extend the Greenway as an asset for residents and visitors.

The WRWC has worked at Hillside to improve views to the river and restore native plants.

On October 21 volunteers will install a native meadow along the Greenway to attract birds and butterflies. These changes help restore the river’s ecology and function.

Look for more changes on the Greenway at the Hillside Gateway over the next few years, like colorful signs with bike routes and fun facts about sights you can enjoy along the Greenway.

The WRWC works with other groups statewide to connect the Greenway to other bike paths across Rhode Island. They hope to increase healthy living with safe walking, bike paths, less smog and more green spaces. To learn more or get involved, visit planri.com. Events like the one planned for October 21 at Hillside Avenue provide a great example of what open spaces could look like while riding across all of Rhode Island.
