Women’s self-defense seminar kicks it up to raise funds for cancer battle

Deborah Robillard was recently diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer, and Johnston’s own RI Self-Defense Center recently went above and beyond to help her with her battle.

The center recently held a women’s self-defense seminar fundraiser for Deborah, who is the mother of one of their instructors, Walt Robillard, a decorated war veteran who served distinctively in the U.S. Army. Walt volunteers at RI Self-Defense center and teaches the child and adult classes.

The fundraiser took in over $2,200 from participants who came in from around the state. All the funds raised will go towards Deborah’s recovery and expenses.

The seminar covered strategies for women to help ensure their safety, what to look for before an attack happens, and also what to do during and after an attack.

Sensei Michael Orsini, owner of RI Self-Defense Center, said that the women participants learned self-defense strategies and techniques, and then put their skills to the test by defending against Orsini, who wore a Redman suit, while he attacked them.

Deborah could not attend the seminar due to her illness, but her son Walter accepted the donations in her honor.
