The Johnston football team dropped a 52-50 thriller against host Pilgrim last Friday night in a wild game that took two overtime periods to complete.
The two clubs were tied 14-14 after the first quarter and Pilgrim took a 22-21 lead into halftime. Pilgrim extended its lead to 30-21 in the third quarter, but Johnston would fight back to score 15 points in the fourth to force overtime with a 36-36 score.
Each team scored eight points in the first overtime period and the Panthers managed to score six more in double overtime, but the host was able to score a touchdown with the 2-point conversion which would be enough to grab the victory.
Johnston quarterback Matt Clements threw four touchdown passes and no interceptions in the six periods. Ethan Placella hauled in a pair of touchdown passes while Dean Paris and Giovanni Celani also grabbed a touchdown pass each. Lyalo Harrison-Perez and Mike Abbruzzi each had four receptions while Paris led the team with 57 yards receiving.
Paris was even more dangerous on the ground, rushing for 176 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Clements also rushed for a touchdown in the loss.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-5 overall and the team will be taking on Classical in the season finale this weekend. A win would send the Panthers to the Division III playoffs. Pilgrim improved to 5-2 with the win.
