About a year and a half into the pandemic, a class of freshmen began its time in Pilgrim High School. That class has now finished that chapter and begun another.

 Last Wednesday, Pilgrim celebrated its graduates and their years of hard work throughout high school. The ceremony was held at the University of Rhode Island’s Ryan Center.

 Principal Toby Gibbons praised the 274 graduates for their steadfast perseverance in handling the challenges that came their way.

He recalled meeting with the junior class a year ago and said he had asked them to become the leaders of the school.

 “Since last June, you have taken that to heart and made our school the warm, welcoming, inclusive place where every person has a sense of belonging and can all grow and learn during what can be difficult teenage years,” Gibbons said.

He called it an amazing year and urged the graduating seniors to keep being generous with their time, empathy and social awareness.

Misharel Johnson, the 2025 valedictorian, thanked family, friends and faculty who helped support her time in high school. She recognized the significance of graduation for the class, saying it was the beginning of something amazing.

 “As we move forward, I urge you to pursue the path that brings you happiness and purpose,” Johnson said. “We’re not just stepping into the future, we’re shaping it.”

 Salutatorian Keaney Bayha encouraged graduates to find what matters to them. She said not to waste time worrying about who will remember you. Instead, she said, find out who you want to be.

“Each path is as important as the next, remember that” Bayha said. “High school isn’t the end; it’s just one of the first chapters.”
