Just a thought here - Texas as a state has better employment opportunities, better cost of living, better public schools, better private schools, public government corruption is less influential and their economy is growing and most "best place to live/retire/raise a family" has Texas near the top and Rhode Island near the bottom.
Perhaps, we should let Texas influence things more!
(Also - our TV stations and newpapers are owned in whole or part by outside entities that influence the direction of the content)
