Citizens employees take part in Earth Day cleanup

“This is great!” Simone Fairman said as she raked leaves, fallen tree branches, and brush behind the Johnston Fire Station at 1173 Atwood Ave. “I wish we could have started this earlier.”

Statements like that were commonplace last Thursday morning, as more than three-dozen Citizens Bank employees participated in Earth Day 2016, which included cleaning up seven of Johnston’s historical cemeteries.

Fairman – a native of Perth, Australia, who works in the corporate real estate division of Citizens Bank – was joined by colleagues Jared Wallace, Ed Lennon, Joe Starnes, David Tarantelli, and Steve Serapiglia on one of seven teams that performed the day’s unique community service project.

It all began at approximately 9 a.m. when Mayor Joseph Polisena greeted the Citizens team, which was headed by David Bowerman and Mike Knipper, inside sun-covered Johnston War Memorial Park.

Each of the Citizens employees enjoyed coffee was provided and served by Johnston Parks and Recreation Department employees, including Vin Jacavone and Nicole Cournoyer.

The morning began with Polisena thanking the town’s newest corporate business partner for making such a huge investment in Johnston. The company recently announced plans for a multi-million dollar corporate campus in town.

The cleanup was coordinated by Melissa Dumaine and Andree Perkins of Citizens and Dan Mazzulla, Johnston’s parks and recreation director.

“Citizens colleagues are excited about becoming part of the community of Johnston,” said Knipper, who also attended the Johnston Little League opening days last weekend along with Dumaine. “We are committed to helping out in the town whenever possible, and thank the town for its partnership.”

Citizens employees not only pitched in to help beautify seven historical cemeteries in Johnston, they also provided the boys and girls teams with water bottles and painted 10 picnic tables inside Johnston War Memorial Park.
