Herring return to the Woonasquatucket; 50/50 raffle supports the river

Posted

From March through May, Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) volunteers count river herring as they return to the river to spawn. After living for three to four years in the ocean, they teem through the fish ladder at Rising Sun Mills dam in Olneyville to start the next generation right where they were born, in the Woony.

On April 14, 42 river herring, also known as alewives or buckeyes, swam through the gate in 10 minutes.

This year, the WRWC is offering a 50/50 raffle to make watching fish even more fun. For $10 a chance, you can try to guess how many fish will return this year. The winner will win half the pot. The other half helps restore the Woony.

Raffle details can be found at wrwc.org or 401-861-9046.

The 2015 fish count total and raffle winner will be announced on Friday, June 5.

More fish return every year. For help with guessing, here are the numbers of fish that returned to the Woony over the last four years: 7,269 in 2011; 9,264 in 2012; 12,336 in 2013; 39,518 in 2014.

The raffle will support the WRWC’s efforts to make the Woonasquatucket better for wildlife and all the people that enjoy it. For more information, visit wrwc.org.
