IPBO Local 307’s golf tournament draws sellout field in support of youth sports

Johnston police officers like Brian Loffredi, Joseph Salvadore, Thomas Dwyer and Mario Menella enjoyed some delightful duty last Saturday in the wilds of Foster.

That foursome put together International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 307’s ninth annual benefit golf tournament, which attracted a sellout field of 144 golfers to Foster Country Club’s 6,221-yard layout.

From the time golfers registered and received special gifts like cigars and custom-designed T-shirts and enjoyed a luncheon donated by Don DePetrillo of The Original Italian Bakery on Atwood Avenue, until the post-golf dinner was complete, this year’s golf tourney was rated an overwhelming success.

There were several factors, in fact, that produced such a highly rated result.

“We had possibly a record-setting number of 50 area businesses support this year’s tourney,” a police spokesperson offered. “Everyone was impressed with just how many different tee signs there were on the course.”

Carl Acciardo – a retired and native Johnstonian who is part of the golf team at Foster Country Club – set up all the tee signs prior to Saturday’s tee off.

“I couldn’t believe how many signs we had,” Acciardo said while helping tidy up the patio area where lunch and beverages were served. “And I put out each and every sign.”

Those 72 carts that carried two golfers each during the sun-splashed tourney were provided courtesy of Brian Cum and Gentry Movers.

Yet another reason for the tournament’s success came in form of major sponsorships from Patriot Disposal, J.R. Vinagro, Gentry Movers/Brian Crum, East Side Enterprises/the Breckel Family, Scituate Liquors, and the Coca Cola Company.

Although a Cranston Police Department foursome took home top honors for the day, and Bruno and Sons Electric and Johnston Police Capt. Matthew Leduc’s foursome placed third, the real winner of 18-hole go-round will be Johnston youth sports.

“Our union feels very strongly about supporting youth sports in town,” Salvadore said. “We don’t have a final tally, but we’re proud to help the many different youth sports groups.”

Gian Bianchi and Brandon Viens were also among the day’s winning golfers as they shared the tournament customary 50/50.
