Kelley-Gazzerro Post hosting Chicken Feast to support building upgrades

Rosemary Clooney’s one-time popular hit record “This Ole House” wouldn’t hold water with members of the Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, located at 1418 Plainfield St. on the Cranston-Johnston line.

“Granted, his old house is getting old,” VFW member Raymond Denisewich said of the post, which was built in 1955. “But this ole house ain’t letting in the rain or cold; she just needs a little lovin’.”

The entire Kelley-Gazzerro membership, headed by a number of ranking officers, will hold Post 2812’s annual Chicken Feast this Sunday, April 10, from noon to 2 p.m. to provide financial support for upgrades to the landmark.

Commander Ron DiMaio, senior vice commander Ron Ricci, junior vice commander Dennis A. Lillibridge, and quartermaster John A. DeFusco – along with nine other officers – are hoping for a record turnout at this year’s feast.

The menu will include chef Ralph DeFusco’s famous roast chicken dinner, salad, pasta, and French fries. Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 12. Tickets will be on sale at the door throughout Sunday’s Chicken Feast and may also be purchased at the bar inside the Kelley-Gazzerro Post.

Anyone who’d like to reserve tickets should all the post at 401-942-9500.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Post 2812 is dealing with another old house, and is looking for volunteers with specific construction skills to assist a fellow veteran with a home repair and renovation project.

“Paul Usenia is a United States Coast Guard veteran who lives at 196 East Shore Drive in Exeter – Boon Lake – who needs our help,” Denisewich said. “We’re working with the Home Depot store in North Kingstown, and with a grant from the company’s foundation, we’re hoping to renovate his home.”

The scope of the work, Denisewich said, includes masons to rebuild the brick chimney and repair the cinder block foundation. Also needed are carpenters to build and install three exterior windows, one five-food sliding glass door, two interior wooden doors, and an 11-foot by 13-foot laminate floor.

Denisewich said the renovation project will include work on the stairs that lead to the boiler room and repairing and re-shingling a portion of the roof.

“We also need volunteer help from plumbers and electricians,” he said. “We are also looking for painters and will have a date later this month to take on this much-needed project for a brother veteran. Please help; this is an old house that does, in fact, need repair.”

Anyone who’d like to assist in the project may call the Kelley-Gazzerro Post at 401-942-9500.
