The Johnston wrestling team took on some of the state’s top teams on Saturday at the Warwick Vets Hurricane Invitational and came away with a strong fourth-place finish. East Providence won the title with 200 points, Glastonbury, Conn., took second with 183, Vets was third with 164 and Johnston grabbed fourth with 150.5.

The Panthers had six place-winners, led by sophomore Matt Alvarez, who won the title at 113 with a win over East Greenwich’s Ebed Jarrell. Justin Caparco was also a finalist, placing second at 145.

Josh Ribezzo, Marc Conte and Chris Gelardi all grabbed third-place finishes, while Mike Caparco finished fourth at 120.

The Panthers are 8-1 in dual meets this season and will look to finish strong as the season winds down. Johnston is slated to host a tri-meet today at 6 p.m. against Exeter/West Greenwich and West Warwick. (Sun Rise photos by Mike Zawistoski / MZ Sports Shots @ efotolab.com)
