The Johnston High School wrestling team became another victim of Bishop Hendricken’s dominant season but salvaged a victory over Coventry in a quad meet last Thursday at the school. The Panthers also wrestled Toll Gate in non-league action.
Hendricken cruised to its 10th and 11th straight victories at the quad, beating Coventry 72-3 and Johnston 67-12. The Panthers got pins from Jon Soto and Tim Tedesco against the Hawks, but nothing else. Hendricken won eight matches by pin.
Against Coventry, the Panthers picked up a solid victory, winning 41-34. They won eight of 14 matches, five by pin.
Soto, Jesse Ribezzo, Richard Conte, Devin Soares and Alex Tenerella all won by pin, with Tedesco notching a tech-fall. Anthony Antonucci and Isaiah O’Brien picked up crucial wins at 106 and 113.
The Panthers – who are still battling injuries to some standouts – are now 5-4-1 heading into a big match Thursday against Mt. Hope. The Huskies are just ahead of Johnston for second place in Division I-South at 5-2. North Providence leads with a 6-1 mark.
Thursday’s match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Johnston.
