Recreation dept. ready to welcome Easter Bunny, host Fishing Derby

It has always been one of the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department’s most popular events.

It has always been filled with fun and well organized for children in different age groups.

It is the annual “Meet the Easter Bunny and Easter Egg Hunt,” scheduled for Saturday, April 4 inside Johnston War Memorial Park.

“We’re planning to hold this year’s program outside,” Vin Jackvony, the department’s program director, announced earlier this week. “Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the sun is shining and the temperature keeps getting warmer and warmer.”

Children five and under can meet the Easter Bunny from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Easter Bunny will be available for pictures, and will be handing out candy. There is no Egg Hunt for this age group.

Children ages six to eight are invited to take part in an Easter Egg Hunt beginning at 11:30 a.m. Jackvony urged all adults to please bring a bag or basket for the eggs and candy.

“We’re hoping this will be one of our biggest Easter Egg Hunts ever,” Jackvony said. “The Easter Bunny will also be walking around the park during the hunt.”

Jackvony said that in case of inclement weather, the Easter Bunny will be at the Johnston recreation office from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

If the weather forecast is calling for inclement weather, residents are urged to look on the recreation department’s website, johnstonrec.com, on Friday, April 3, for any changes that may be made due to such conditions.

FISHING DERBY

SET FOR APRIL 26

The Parks and Recreation Department will team up with Save the Lakes Rhode Island for its annual Fishing Derby, which is open to all boys and girls ages five to 13 and will be held on Sunday, April 26, inside Johnston War Memorial Park.

Jackvony, who’ll be assisted by Save the Lakes personnel and recreation staffers, said parents and/or guardians must accompany all participants under the ages of 10.

“Please remember this event is meant for the kids,” he said. “Please let the children do all the fishing. However, parents may help cast the lines and release the fish when necessary.”

Awards will be presented for individual achievement in three different ages divisions.

Boys and girls ages eight to 10 will be allowed to enter and fish the derby from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The division for children ages five to seven will fish from 10:30 a.m. to noon, while the older kids ages 11 to 13 are scheduled to compete for top honors beginning at 12:30 p.m. and running until 2 p.m. There is no entrance fee.
