St. Brigid’s 12th Fall Bazaar a big success

Traffic was relatively slow at 1231 Plainfield St. Saturday as drivers were trying to find a parking place as close as possible to St. Brigid’s Church in Johnston.

Meanwhile, inside the Roman Catholic parish, people were enjoying meatball sandwiches, looking over an extra large selection of themed gift baskets and buying bottles of wine that included some rather nifty gift certificates.

That was not only the scene on Saturday, however. It extended into Sunday morning, as the proud parishioners at St. Brigid’s presented their annual 12th annual Fall Bazaar.

“They’ve got all kinds of great things,” was a common cry throughout the church’s multi-purpose meeting room-auditorium, where dozens upon dozens of people browsed from display to display – and even the mini-kitchen – trying to decide just what to purchase.

“It seems as though everyone is having fun,” said Fran Wilke, who chairs the annual fundraising event. “We’re thrilled with the turnout so far.”

By the end of the two-day event, long-time parishioners like Louisa Iannotti – who doubles as “Mrs. Everything-Public Relations Person” for the ageless Roman Catholic parish – was somewhat taken aback by the overflow crowd she called “one of our biggest in recent years.”

For ladies like Sally Stacey, the annual bazaar was super special. Not only did she man one of many booths that attracted lots of interest and sales, she took time our Saturday to enjoy one of St. Brigid’s famous meatball sub sandwiches.

“Oh, they’re great,” Stacey said while holding the oversized sub with two hands. “There’s nothing quite like a meatball sandwich here.”

Although there was an extraordinary selection of handmade items and holiday decorations, one of the most unique offerings was the annual Wine Table that was again manned by Meredith DeGuilo.

DeGuilo, who has been a mainstay at the Wine Table in years past, explained that each bottle of wine cost only $20 and was accompanied by an additional gift certificate valued from $5 to $15 or $20.

“It’s a real popular fundraiser,” said DeGuilio while taking a brief break. “People love this Wine Table, and it really helps our parish.”
