Students connect with resources at College Planning Night

Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions in the lives of many students.

Last week, Johnston High School held a College Planning Night to help guide local teens as they explore their options and prepare for the next academic step.

“We were thrilled to see such a great turnout for this event,” Principal Zachary Farrell said. “We realize that the cost of higher education can seem like an insurmountable barrier for some students. That’s why we’re repeatedly saying early planning is essential … There are many resources out there, and our goal is to work with students and our partners in higher education. We want to ensure that our students have access and opportunity to a great post-second education when they leave high school.”

The event covered a range of subjects, and included a question-and-answer portion. It was coordinated by Johnston High’s Guidance Department.

Representatives from the Community College of Rhode Island, Providence College, University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, Johnson & Wales University, New England Institute of Technology, and Bryant University set up booths and passed out information to attendees about their respective institutions.

“This is a wonderful turnout,” said Virginia Snyder-Cardozo, an admission officer at Johnson & Wales. “It’s never too early to start planning for the future.”

Rob Giovino of CCRI, Ruby Jones of URI, and Omar Reyes of RIC – along with other school officials – also praised the Guidance Department for its efforts.

“Our Guidance Department worked real hard on this event,” Farrell said. “Congratulations and thank you to our counselors, Debbie Licciardi, Mary Vingi, Ryan Barrette, Daniele Mallari, and Laruen Fagundes, for doing an outstanding job.”
