Rasoi excels in Indian regional dishes

Posted

We have experienced Rasa in East Greenwich and Chaska in Cranston, two other Indian restaurants affiliated with Rasoi in Pawtucket, and enjoyed their unique approach to the cuisine of India.

We now add Rasoi to our “favorites” list.

Rasoi translates as “kitchen”, and what a fine kitchen they have. Innovative, tasty, reasonably priced Indian cuisine emerges from the open kitchen to your table, served by helpful waiters who patiently guide you through the extensive menu.

Rasoi recently moved to a larger, more impressive space in a shopping center at 727 East St. in Pawtucket, just over the Providence line and down the street from India, joining two other new tenants, Antonias Pizza and the heavily hyped Mavens.

Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and dinner from 11:30 until closing, seven days a week.

While the restaurant is often crowded, service is fast and friendly. Our waiter took the time to explain that Spicy meant Spicy and Mild might better serve Joyce’s taste buds.

You must start with the Naan, that wonderfully warm Indian bread. We suggest garlic and cilantro or onion and cilantro at $5. If you like it sweet, the honey and ginger is great.

We skipped the impressive list of appetizers and went right for the entrees, with most reasonably priced between $19 and $22.

Joyce chose the Spicy Garlic Shrimp, stir fried shrimp with onions and peppers, and a delicious red sauce served with white rice ($22). She found it to be delicious and as listed, spicy.

I was fascinated with the special Valentines Week Special of “sliced” lamb. ($22) I usually order lamb when I go Indian and pictured the slices like ham or turkey.

The plate arrived with a huge portion of lab chunks, similar to other lamb dishes I have enjoyed, but with thinly sliced red pepper and spices that added to the taste of the lamb. Mixed with the accompanying brown rice and gravy, the dinner was one of the best I have ever experienced.

We both enjoyed our “leftovers” the following evening, bringing the costs of the each entree to $11.

We’ll be back to try the Boneless Goat in four variations at $22, while Joyce eyed the Shrimp Biryani at the same price.

Rasoi has weekend buffets from 11:30 to 3:00. Saturdays is vegetarian at $18 and Sundays is a full buffet at $22.
